Sod Installation Tips and Tricks

 
It’s exciting to see your beautiful new lawn almost instantly appear. Installing a sod yard is instant gratification. Laying sod isn’t difficult. However, there are a few steps to reduce die off and ensure a successful installation.


Preparation is essential.


There’s no time for prep work once your sod is on location. It has to be put down immediately or it will heat up and rot. Decided which type of sod grass will work best for your area. Break down and amended the soil make sure the area is smooth and free of all pebbles, sticks, and debris. Even small objects can be noticeable as bumps if left under new sod grass.

Tips for Installing Turf

The installation of an artificial lawn or artificial putting green is a step-by-step process.

  • Step 1 remove any existing sod and cap off the sprinkler system. The goal is to begin with a dirt surface. If you are in a new home, obviously that is the most ideal condition to begin the installation process.

  • Step 2 The second step is building a sub-base which will go over the top of a dirt surface. Typically, 1/4 minus decomposed crushed granite is to build the sub-base. Depending on whether you are installing an artificial lawn or artificial putting green, the depth of the sub-base varies. For example, a sub-base depth of 2”-4” for a lawn and 4”-24” for a putting green.

An easy method to adding interest to landscaping is simply by adding some height to the landscape. Height is often overlooked or created without any thought to its role in the artistic value of the design. However, it can and should be given some thought as a design element in landscapes and help improve dull flat yards.

There are several ways to create height in a landscape. Plantings themselves create a second level. Generally, height is created by retaining walls, arbors and other hardscapes, plants, and berms.
